A Simple Step By Step Procedure for TD-20 Kit Sharing

Thought I'd run down the procedure for Compact Flash Kit Sharing. I've gotten questions, and it is a few more words than Private Messaging allows.

What You Need:
You need a Compact Flash Card.... Anything between 8 and 512 MB will work. I recommend getting a couple cheap cards for Kit Sharing... 32MB cards can be purchased for about $10 through Ritz Camera. With an extra card for sharing, you will never confuse your backups with shared kits. You need a card reader attached to your computer. If you don't have one, they are inexpensive and can be added internally or externally via USB cable. Here's one example:
http://www.xpcgear.com/black12in1.html

The Steps
Step 1. Format the Compact Flash Card .. This is done in the TD-20 Module. While the Module is Off, insert the new card. Turn the Module on, Press Card, the screen will say Unformatted Card... Press Accept, then from the submenus select Format Card. Continue pressing the appropriate button until the Card is Formatted... Screen will say Complete! when your done.

Step 2. Back Up your existing kits.. This is important, since once you load new kits all your existing kits/tweaks would be lost if you don't have them backed up to a CF card. The preset kits are permanent, no worries, but keep a current backup for all the changes you've already done! With a formatted Card, Press Card, On the Screen: Press Save, turn the dial to the Back Up # you want.. 1 through 8. Press Save again. Press Name to create a name for your personal Back Up. Press Execute... Simple .. follow the Screen.

Step 3. Download the Kit Files that you want to use from my Site. The Files are under the Misc category.. Click on one of the files that people have shared. Then Right click on the TD0 file and save it to your desktop.

Step 4. Remove the Formatted Card from the Module (when the Module is OFF). Insert the Card into the Card Reader. On my computer next I Press Start, My Computer, Find and click on the Card Reader. Click the Roland Folder, The TD folder will appear.... Drag and drop the file that you downloaded to your desktop to the 'TD Folder. The new kits are now on your CF card.

Step 5. Take the CF card from the Card Reader and place it in your TD-20 module (while OFF). Turn the Module on. Press Card. Press Load.... Follow the Screen Instructions....

Uploading files to my Website is pretty much a reverse procedure. After putting the Card in the Card Reader, click on the file, click on the Roland Folder, click on the TD Folder, Drag and Drop the TD0 file to your desktop. Go to my Site and press Contact Me... Email me your file... I'll post your kits with a brief Explanation. One other thing that is helpful is to change the name of your modified kits ON YOUR MODULE. For Example: Kit #2 Slammin .... is JSlammin on my module... that way it is easy to tell which kits are modified and which are basically untouched preset kits. Also when naming your Back-ups .. if you put your name or name and date... it is easy to tell who's kits are on that file... (good job on that P)

All these words..... for such a quick and easy procedure... Takes 5 minutes or so to do all this... and a H_ll of a lot longer to type... Jman

It would be useful if some sort of conventions could be agreed upon like:

...Include your screen name or initials in the kit name so that we can distinguish your kit vs. your kit edited by someone else.

...Better yet, come up with an original name for the kit like some have done.

...Include the "edit" symbol in the kit name so that we can easily pick out which of the 50 kits have been edited.

It would also be useful to know a bit about the environment in which you tweeked the kits ... i.e. headphones, ear plugs, Mackie SRM 450s, TDA 700, outboard gear, etc.

Also, are you tweeking for live performance, recording, or just a kick-butt good time.

Thanks for those that have contributed. I have learned a bunch from studying the tweeks.
